EXCESSIVE SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS)

EXCESSIVE SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS)

Hyperhidrosis refers to abnormal sweating, such as sweating when it’s not very warm.  Individuals who sweat excessively will often drip sweat or soak through their clothing.  The main areas affected by excessive sweating are the armpits, the palms of the hand, the groin region, the soles of the feet, the face and chest.  Unfortunately, regular antiperspirants don’t work well for patients with this condition.

RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS

The good news is that it can be managed successfully with botulinum toxin.  Neurotoxin treatments works by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands.  When you receive neurotoxin injections directly into the area of your body that excessively sweats (i.e., underarms), your overactive nerves are essentially paralyzed.  When your nerves can’t signal your sweat glands,  you no longer sweat. However, this is not a permanent solution and retreatment is necessary ever 4-6 months.  Fortunately, it is may be covered by your extended health plan.
