Facial Expressions: What Causes Frown Lines?

You wear your heart on your sleeve and your emotions on your face. Frown lines, also known as “worry lines,” and crow’s feet are created by repeated facial expressions and movements, like frowning and squinting, so they can start to appear at a younger age. However, there are various factors that can cause or worsen the appearance of frown lines:

  • Aging
  • Smoking
  • Sun Exposure
  • Repeated Facial Expressions

The good news is that treatments like neuromodulators can help create a smoother, younger-looking appearance.

What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators temporarily reduce the movement of certain upper facial muscles to help improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines (“glabellar lines”) and crow’s feet lines (“lateral canthal lines”) in adults under 65 years of age. When performed by a highly trained and skilled medical professional, the treatment is relatively painless, results are very natural, and the patient is left looking and feeling rejuvenated. Your untreated facial muscles will still work normally, allowing you to freely show natural facial expressions, like smiling.

The Science Behind Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are made of neurotoxins, specifically botulinum toxin type A. Neurotoxin is a purified form of botulinum toxin that is obtained from bacteria. Neurotoxins work very simply by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles, therefore relaxing the muscles of the face that cause fine lines and wrinkles.

The small, regulated amount of neurotoxin given to correct wrinkles has been used safely for several decades. By modulating or relaxing muscles, we can minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Treatments made with neurotoxins are sold under various brand names.

Benefits of Neuromodulators

Effective Wrinkle Reduction

Neuromodulators excel in smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, particularly those that appear on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. They work by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for the formation of these lines, resulting in a smoother, more youthful complexion.

Minimal Downtime

One of the most appealing aspects of neuromodulator treatments is the minimal downtime required. Patients can typically resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

Preventative Anti-Aging Benefits

Regular use of neuromodulators can not only treat existing lines and wrinkles but also prevent new ones from forming. By relaxing facial muscles, these treatments can slow the development of deeper lines, maintaining a youthful appearance for longer.

Non-Invasive Treatments

Unlike surgical anti-aging solutions, neuromodulators are non-invasive, involving only a series of small injections. This means there’s no need for incisions, anesthesia, or a lengthy recovery period.

Customizable Results

Neuromodulator treatments are highly customizable, allowing practitioners to tailor the treatment to meet the specific needs and desired outcomes of each patient. Whether targeting specific areas or seeking a more general improvement, the results can be finely tuned.

Quick Treatment

The treatment itself is quick, often taking no more than 15 to 20 minutes. This makes neuromodulator injections an ideal “lunchtime treatment” for those looking to fit their cosmetic enhancements into a tight schedule.

Natural-Looking Results

When administered by skilled professionals, neuromodulators provide results that look and feel natural. Patients can achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance without looking “overdone.”

Long-Lasting Effects

The effects of neuromodulator treatments are long-lasting, typically ranging from three to six months. This duration allows patients to enjoy their rejuvenated appearance for an extended period before needing a follow-up treatment.

Compatibility With Other Treatments

Neuromodulators can be safely combined with other treatments, such as fillers or laser treatments, for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. This compatibility allows for a more holistic approach to addressing aesthetic concerns.

Other Uses of Neuromodulators

So much more than a wrinkle treatment.

Although they’re best known for their ability to smooth wrinkles, neuromodulators have impressed the medical community time and time again with their seemingly endless applications. In the late 1990s, neuromodulators gained popularity as wrinkle reducers. Fairly soon after, it gained notoriety as a treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

It has also been widely used for conditions such as neck spasms, eye twitching, Raynaud’s disease, and overactive bladder. In addition, research has shown its benefits for migraine headaches. As a result, in 2010, the FDA approved neuromodulators as a preventive treatment for chronic migraines.

The neck has a big job to do. It supports the weight of the head, allows the head to turn and flex, and protects the nerves that carry sensory and motor information from the brain down to the rest of the body. Want to get rid of that “pain in the neck”? Neurotoxins, also known as neuromodulators, relieve neck pain caused by chronically contracted muscles.

Allodynia causes pain from stimuli that aren’t normally painful. Migraine sufferers will often complain of pain with brushing their hair, as will other simple activities such as washing their face, laying their head on a pillow, or a gentle tap on the wrist.

Chronic migraine is typically defined as experiencing 15 or more headache days per month, with at least eight of those days displaying migraine characteristics, over a period of three months or more. Chronic headache begins as less frequent headache episodes that gradually evolve into a more frequent headache pattern. The idea that neurotoxin injections could help migraine sufferers came from random observations of migraine improvement in women receiving neurotoxin treatments for cosmetic purposes.

With chronic migraines, sensory nerves become inflamed and hypersensitive. The inflammation is caused by the molecules that are released by the sensory nerves that modulate pain. Each treatment typically involves 31 injections in seven key areas of the head and neck.

Teeth grinding is an involuntary behavior that often becomes a nuisance as it may cause jaw pain, headaches, the wearing away of tooth enamel, gum sensitivity, or even chipped teeth. Treatment involves neuromodulator injections into the muscles responsible for moving your jaw.

Some neuromodulators will reduce clenching, and they will also help with any accompanying tension and aches in your head that you may be experiencing. Neuromodulators usually take effect a few days after injection (but can take up to two weeks), and the effects could last anywhere from three to six months.

Hyperhidrosis refers to abnormal sweating, such as sweating when it’s not very warm. Individuals who sweat excessively will often drip sweat or soak through their clothing. Regular antiperspirants don’t work well for patients with this condition.

Neurotoxin treatments work by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. When you receive neuromodulator injections directly into the area of your body (e.g., underarms) that excessively sweats, your overactive nerves are essentially paralyzed. When your nerves can’t signal your sweat glands, you no longer sweat. Unfortunately, this is not a permanent solution. Retreatment is necessary every four to six months.

Located on both sides of the head, where the jawbone meets the skull, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is used during talking, eating, swallowing, etc. This joint can become displaced or overused, resulting in severe tension headaches, as well as sharp pain in the jaw.

TMD signs and symptoms include pain and tenderness in or around the ear, the jaw joint, or the muscles of the jaw, face, or temples. Other symptoms include issues with opening/closing your mouth and a clicking/popping/crunching or grinding noise when you yawn, chew, or open your mouth.

Neurotoxin treatments for TMD and associated jaw tension and pain involve injecting into the affected facial muscles. In cases of severe stress, neuromodulator injections can even minimize lockjaw.

Neuromodulators vs. Fillers

Neuromodulators and fillers, though both injectables, differ significantly in their functions. Neuromodulators relax muscles to smooth wrinkles, primarily on the forehead and around the eyes. Fillers, made of substances like hyaluronic acid, restore volume to areas like cheeks and lips. Each targets different aging signs, offering varied solutions for facial rejuvenation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neuromodulators

Neurotoxin targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines — the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising the eyebrows over the years. Dr. Mazzuca will inject these muscles with neuromodulators to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of the frown lines between your brows, your crow’s feet lines, and your forehead lines.

Not at all! Many men make neuromodulators part of what they do to care for their appearance. The number of men choosing treatments like neuromodulators has risen fast — in the past three years alone, men have received over 1 million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they’re bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow’s feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.†

†Results from a survey of men to determine the most likely treatment areas and top areas of concern for injectable-naïve, aesthetically oriented men aged 30 to 65 years (N=600). The proportion of respondents selecting that area as the highest priority to treat using the Maximum Difference (MaxDiff) scaling system.

Treatment with neuromodulators is customized to your goals and needs. When you meet with Dr. Mazzuca, she will determine the appropriate treatment for any areas you wish to address, including moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

For the crow’s feet area, Dr. Mazzuca will inject three areas of the muscle that frame the side of the eye. This will be repeated on the muscle that frames the other eye. For the frown lines area, Dr. Mazzuca will administer five injections into the muscles between your brows and on your forehead. For the forehead lines area, Dr. Mazzuca will administer five injections into a muscle in your forehead.

Neurotoxin is a technique-sensitive treatment. You can trust neuromodulators to deliver subtle results when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. So you’ll look like yourself — only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.

It’s not your age that determines when neuromodulators are right for you — it’s the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30s.

The truth is that everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time to reduction of collagen, genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Whenever your lines start to bother you, speak with Dr. Mazzuca. She can help you determine if treatment is right for you.

The actual injection process takes a quick 10 minutes. Dr. Mazzuca will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Some patients report that being injected with neurotoxin feels like a pinch. Dr. Mazzuca may use ice to numb the treatment area. Or, if you are concerned about discomfort, Dr. Mazzuca may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

Treatment requires minimal downtime. So you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave our office.

You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient, so your physician will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.

BEAUTIPHICATION™️

Maximize beauty. Restore symmetry, harmony and balance.

Dr. Mazzuca employs a variety of techniques and methods, including those of Dr. Arthur Swift (Swift Beauty).  A trend-setter in the rapidly developing field of cosmetic injectables, Dr. Swift has pioneered and trademarked a revolutionary approach to non-surgical facial enhancement: BEAUTIPHICATION™️. Seeking beauty is not just about restoring youthfulness – it resides in pleasing facial proportions. BEAUTIPHICATION™️ is an injection facial procedure that follows Leonardo Da Vinci’s mathematical principle of beauty and harmony through “divine” proportion.  It is a medical application of the concept that ideal beauty might be a universal notion, provable by the mathematical concept of “phi” (the golden ratio) long used by artists and architects.  A caliper measuring tool, similar to the one used by the Renaissance master, maps out the injection of cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers (such as injectable fillers and Botox®️, to put things simply) with the precision necessary to enhance features and restore smooth contours.  Using Dr. Swift’s BEAUTIPHICATION™️ approach, Dr. Mazzuca is able to maximize a person’s beauty potential by restoring symmetry, harmony and balance.
